Greetings Jollyworkrs!

Attract and Conserve Talent

If you cultivate an environment that encourages everyone to smile, genuinely smile, then all else being equal you're a much more appealing organisation to work for than your competitors.

We have scoured reports from Investors in People, The Best Companies to Work For, and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Here are the common themes making people happy at work:

  • My colleagues!
  • I'm empowered and have responsibility
  • My manager is fair, flexible and supports me
  • I have a voice and I'm listened to
  • My work is never boring and has an impact
  • My work area is clean, modern and safe
  • My organisation invests in me and there are opportunities to grow
  • My organisation respects, appreciates and rewards me
  • I am proud of my organisation

How many of these points would resonate with your team?

By ignoring even one of these points, an absence of happiness is created.  Whenever someone doesn't feel appreciated or sees their problems aren't being take seriously, each time a lack of team spirit isn't addressed; then happiness at work is slowly being eaten away. The potential for fun is fading, and that's when your ability to conserve talent weakens.

These nine points are at the heart of our mission. Everything we research, write and create is centred around these key components. No doubt, as time goes on, we will add more principles; the world evolves, new generations enter the workplace, priorities change.

Deloitte recently conducted a pulse survey and found, amidst many fascinating insights, Millenials and Gen Zs hold in higher regard organisations that implement environmental sustainability programs and provide opportunities for employees to be involved in their communities. This high regard increased significantly at the height of COVID-19 lockdown, presumably because those surveyed had more time to reflect on the wider world and their place within. This is worth knowing. Will you adapt your employee engagement strategy to adopt this?

A Better Business

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development states:

Employees who have good quality jobs and are managed well, will not only be happier, healthier and more fulfilled, but are also more likely to drive productivity, better products or services, and innovation.

We sometimes need to state the obvious. Yet it is all too easy to take one's eye off the ball, to miss what is happening on the ground and forget about those charged with fostering a fulfilling and productive workplace. The pressures and stresses of managing a team, working to deadlines and keeping customers happy, often gets in the way of looking after the people who really matter. No-one disputes the importance of employee wellbeing, but it is frequently swept aside during the maelstrom of day to day operations.

At Jollyworkr we recognise the challenges of maintaining motivation and morale. It isn't easy to sustain, and while a one off team building session might make work fun for a day, embedding the right culture throughout your organisation; being proactive and aware, continually adapting and addressing the signals, will ensure your employees are happy and you have a better business.
